Why do DAWs still have "record" button ?

martyn productions

In this modern age, when storage is affordable, computers are fast, why is there still a "record" button ? we would expect our DAWs to always be capturing our performances and only save the takes we choose. When we are in the studio having mic plugged in and midi controller ready, jamming, trying out new musical ideas, or accidently coming up with an amazing musical tune.

It is understandable that in the past days when everything was recorded onto to studio multitrack tape, or using home cassette tape recorder, in order to make a decision to record a track unto the tape the engineer or tape operator had to press "record" button. Because of one big physical limitation: material, and that material was recording medium.

Now in the modern days when everyone is using DAW, with terabytes of storage space, why do we need a "record" button ? Even thou the audio or midi data is recorded unto solid state drive, at the end we only save the audio files of performances and takes we decide to keep, and we delete unwanted ones or set to have them automatically deleted.

Did you ever play or sung a melody, tune, bass line, drum beat or anything musical and then thought "ooh, I wish have recorded it" or while practicing your performance was great but when you later try to record that part, it doesn't come out as good.

That is why all DAWs should have "always recording" mode that always records the midi or audio input, and we decide to keep the performance on the track or clip after we performed the part the way we like it. That way none of our musical ideas get lost.
